The Feed-in Tariff (FiT) subsidy was recently changed to 15.44p per kWh generation tariff and 4.64p per kWh export tariff. You can find more information on all of the changes to the Feed-in Tariff here.

How it works

Solar Electricity also known as Solar PV (Photovoltaic) works by capturing the sun’s radiation which is then converted into usable electricity for use in the home.
Solar electricity panels, normally mounted on the roof of the building, are made from two or more layers of semi-conducting material. When solar radiation hits the solar panel it creates an electric field across the layers which is then channeled to power the home.  Any the surplus electricity can then be exported to the National Grid.
The stronger the solar radiation, the more electricity is produced – even on a cloudy day!

What is the Feed-in Tariff?

The Feed-in Tariff also known as the FiT is the UK Government’s financial incentive scheme which pays a subsidy for every unit of electricity generated and exported in the home using microgeneration technology, in this case solar electricity.

The table contains examples of PV system facing South, on a roof with a 30 degree tilt angle, with zero shading, based in Zone 6 – Midlands (e.g. Birmingham, Leicester, Derby, Shrewsbury, Northampton or Hereford.) Other Zones will vary.

The performance of solar electricity systems is impossible to predict with certainty due to the variability in the amount of solar radiation (sunlight) from location to location and from year to year. This estimate is based on the Standard MCS Procedure and is given as guidance only. It should not be considered as a guarantee of performance. The Standard MCS Procedure uses data drawn from the European Commission’s, Joint Research Centre ‘Climate-SAF-PVGIS’ datasets, but weighted towards the centre of population  of each of the Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP2012) zones.  These zones are used to include regional variation because latitude and local long-term weather patterns have an impact on solar irradiance reaching the array.

Estimated annual payments available from 01 November 2012 are based on earnings from the proposed Feed-in Tariff rates at 15.44p/kWh, an export tariff of 4.64p and an EPC rating of ‘D’ or higher. The proposed FiT rate if you do not have an EPC at level D or above is 7.1p. These calculations are subject to alterations due to changes made to the Feed-in Tariff by the Department of Energy & Climate Change (www.decc.gov.uk).

Estimated electricity bill saving is calculated as 50% of system output @ 15.32p/kWh, based on our estimate of average electricity prices and information from the Department of Energy & Climate Change (www.decc.gov.uk).

Returns over 20 years are based on RPI of 2.5% pa, electricity price rises of 5% per year and a degradation factor of 0.5% pa.
